The founding
of Debre markos town is attributed to Dejazmach Tedla Gualu, the ruler of the
eastern part of Gojjam which was then called Gojjam, in 1853. At that percat
it was called Menqorer, the name derived from one of the list land holders who
were named Zena & Menqorer sarn this newly founded site gradually grew
physically and was divided into fourteen safer or quarters.
Following the coronation
of Ras Adal who was crowned as Takle Haimanot in 1880 and the establishment of the
Church of
St'mark
in Menqorer in 1882, Nigus Tekel Haimanot who was then the king over Gojjam &
Keffa renamed Mongorer to be called Melielte Adbar Debre Markos in an awaj
(Proclamation)
Deber Markos was selected
to be the capital of Gojjam province; there are some sources that attribute to its
military strategy and to its temperate climate which was free from the deadly malaria
epidemic.

north west
of the capital city of the F.D.R.E. of
Ethiopia

Addis Ababa
at a distance of 300Kms and 265 kms to the capital of Amhara Nation Regional State
Bahir Dar.

it is estimated to be 107,684 of which 57,791 are females and 49,893 are Males this
population of the town includes the population that dwell around the rural kebele
of the town that were incorporated to the administration of the town.

figure mentioned above 42,743 female and35,843 male, population is said ti have
been the young population at the productive age. This indicated that the town possesses
productive labor potential.
